Performance
With around 40 years of research and design, the Performance board is my absolute go to board for the best, hollowest and most powerful waves, in which, I’ve spent majority of my time surfing down south on the rugged Victorian coastline. Built for waves of consequence, I’ve surfed these boards in Indonesia, Hawaii, and Fiji as part of the development process.
The design is really quite simplistic. The bottom shape being single to double concave to double concave Vee to Vee off the tail, all very subtle as to me it’s all about blend. As the boards get longer and for larger waves, I reduce the surface area in the back quarter, increasing the Vee through the tail taking away to double concave Vee. This is because I want the board to be able to sink into the wave so I can physically push the board, because at high speed it’s about grip, not lift.
I add a little more entry rocker which lets me stay in the steep part of the wave, I don’t need to drive out onto the face to do a cutback, it lets me go straight to the top in critical sections, the way in which I really like to surf.
I have a slightly lower rail shape towards the front, as being “old school” I like to move forward on my board when tube riding, a technique developed over years of riding single fins. By lowering the rail gives the board more feeling forward of centre, so I can apply pressure and change line as I’m moving through the tube.
Simplicity is the key to the performance design creating a reliable, trustworthy board for quality waves.
